The IPA Canada National PlayDay celebrates the child’s right to play!

The 2023 IPA Canada National PlayDay is August 2nd!

The IPA Canada National PlayDay events shine the light on the importance of child-directed play! We expanded from 11 PlayDays in various parts of the country in 2018 to 26 PlayDays from BC to NS in 2019. Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic reduced the number of PlayDays to 1 in August 2020. We had a slight increase to 3 PlayDays for 2021. You can view our 2021 National PlayDay map here. For past PlayDay maps, click on the date: 2020; 2019.

When IPA Canada resurrected its National PlayDay initiative at our 2017 Triennial World Conference, we decided to align it with the National PlayDay in the United Kingdom which is the first Wednesday of August in the hope to encourage the establishment of a worldwide International PlayDay. This year it occurs on Wednesday, August 2nd. For more information on the importance of child-directed play and some history on the Canadian event, please see our 2020 National PlayDay blog post.

IPA Canada developed a PlayDay Guide for our original campaign in 2000 that is available for download on our Resources page. Le guide est aussi disponible en français.

As the country readjusts to post-pandemic life, National PlayDay put the spotlight back on play and its fundamental importance for children, families and communities.
